This retelling of Mose Humphreys has all the characteristics of a tall tale. Mose is described as being eight feet tall with hands as big as Virginia hams. He was so strong his huge arms could swim the Hudson River in two strokes.

He could lift trolley cars, jump from burning ladders, save babies in his stovepipe hat, and eat mountains of beans and eggs. The legend of Mose is based on a real New York fireman in The legend of Mose represents all firefighters throughout history.

Tall tales are exaggerations and the illustrations in the book show Mose as an enormous man. The size of book 31 x 24 cm is quite large and the cover shows Mose towering over the buildings. Each illustration exaggerates Moses size in comparison to other people, vehicles, and buildings. Bold paintings capture the spirit of New York in the s. Osborne includes an historical note with the origin of the tall tale of Mose.

I selected this book because I wanted to see Mary Pope Osborne's take on a picture book. My son 5 yrs. Well, this book did not disappoint! The illustrations are vibrant and fabulous.

The tall tale it tell is terrific, and not one that I had read or heard before this book. My son was captured by the story, and said that his favorite parts were that he could swim the Hudson River in two strokes and when everyone thought he swam to Jersey. Osborne also included a historical note about this story being based on our country's first urban tall tale. This book is dedicated to the New York Firefighters who died on September 11, , and I can see how this book would be a great introduction of the events of September 11th to younger children.

I know that the last few pages of this book were very hard for me to read without pausing to shead a few tears because I kept thinking of the brave firefighters who gave their lives on that fateful day. I cried when I read this to my class. You will probably buy the book. Susan Howson. Mose and his pals make for some good NYC accent opportunities, and my son was saving old women from imaginary burning houses for weeks after.

Randi Haranzo. This children's picture book is a great example of historical fiction. Right from the beginning of the book the author takes an effort to inform the reader of the devastating occurrence on September 11th, The story doesn't directly relate to the terrorist attraction, however the book does describe the hardships that firefighters may experiences.
